Something Old, Something New

The BBMC release two videos to the Internet today – The first is a documentary from our archives – Circa 2003, St. John’s, featuring the very first Rock School for Girls. Created by Liz Solo (Pickguard) Rhiannon Thoma and Cherie Pyne Rock School for Girls is an open access skills sharing initiative for women and girl who play or want to play rock music. The release of this video is part of the BBMC Archiving Project, stay tuned to this site for more releases from the vault.

Also today we released (with Roles 4 Women) the very first episode of TrixXxie’s new comedy web series, starring Tallulah Fucque, Marilyn Monroe Take-Out and Scarlet O’Whora with special guest appearances. Co-produced by Roles 4 Women and The BBMC and premiered at this year’s TrixXxieFest.

TrixXxieFest is a pop-up Festival featuring short films, videos and performances to inspire, challenge and amuse you – powerful voices from around the world and here at home.

TrixXxieFest is a semi-annual traveling Festival created in 2014 by the punk rock band TrixXxie. TrixXxieFest highlights alternative voices by presenting thought-provoking media and performance work from around the world and here at home. This year’s festival is happening from Friday June 24th and Saturday June 25th, 2016 at The Cox and Palmer Second Space at the LSPU Hall in downtown St. John’s, Newfoundland. The weekend will be a jam-packed two days of live performances, installations, screenings, parties and a punk rock show.

This year’s event features an International program of film and video shorts highlighting experimental video, filmmaking, animation, and short documentary. Each evening will open with short monologue performances by some of Newfoundland’s most gifted storytellers – Wendi Smallwood, Ruth Lawrence, Monica Walsh, Jenny Naish and Liz Solo will present short pieces of original theatre. The performances will be followed by a screening of short films and animations from all over the world including pieces by local filmmakers Cara Lee Coleman and Corrine Coleman, Jenn Brown, Jacqueline Hynes, Taylor Stocks, Rock School for Girls, TrixXxie, Caroline Nochasak, Heather Angnatok, Jason Dicker, Jennifer Semigak, Joshua Jararuse, Matmatil Angnatok, Maxwell Saksagiak, Troy Maher, Nancy Nochasak, and Sarah Semigak Lidd.

The Sauce debut EP and Video

sauceThe BBMC has teamed up with Baygirl Music to produce the debut EP from The Sauce.

This three piece rock band is another new effort from BBMC members – this time from Colleen Power, Liz Solo and Mike Kean. The band will be creating multiple videos for the new release and debuted the first one today. Dumb Piece of Meat is available to watch on YouTube and the whole EP is now downloadable on Bandcamp.

The BBMC is stoked to be co-presenting the first annual TRIXXXIEFEST WEEKEND with Roles 4 Women Theatre Company and the band/performance group Trixxxie. Trixxxie have been working in the BBMC Studio all winter long and this event features their debut appearance. As you can see by the following amazing lineup TRIXXXIEFEST puts women’s voices front and centre in what is sure to be a super good time. Here’s a few details, stay tuned for announcements.

The Sauce

The BBMC have been sponsoring a number of artists over the winter by providing studio space and gear for budding art projects. First out of the gate for spring is The Sauce – a new musical project from Colleen Power, April Crocker and BBMC members Mike Kean and Liz Solo.

The band will be playing tonight at the Ship in St. John’s with special guests Sam Burke and Sean Panting. The poster and press release are below. Recordings and video releases to follow soon.

Former band-mates from many projects over many years (Live Girlz, Lizband, Black Bags, Colleen Power Band, Alien Rejects) they have reunited with a new sound and a set of songs sure to get you all riled up.

The set will include Sauce favorites: ‘Ex-Mother-In-Law’, ‘The Abduction of Great Big Sea and Shannygannock’ as well as the world premiere of ‘Clone Your Bottom Half’ and many more.

The Black Bags went to Gander

fir_teaThe Black Bags got all dressed up drove to Gander, Newfoundland for the 2013 MusicNL Awards Show and celebrations. Along the way the band took the time to stop for a little boil up and a cup of tea in the woods. The Black Bags were up for six MusicNL awards this year (if you include the nominations for Outstanding Company of the Year for the Black Bag Media Collective). The band were invited to play the awards show live at the Gander Arts and Culture Centre and gave a great performance of Everything is Leaking.
